Hey guys, I just picked up a 1969 25HP Evinrude for my 16ft Alumicraft. It runs pretty good and everything seems to be in order. Even has electric start. I paid 400 for it, is that a decent price for this particular motor in good running condition?

Does anyone know a model number for this outboard, I can't seem to find an ID tag anywhere on it.

Also, I'm assuming the small white knob on the front is a low idle adjustment, am I correct?

Thanks for your help again.

Re: 1969 Evinrude questions

If it is a 1969, then it is a 50:1 mix.
The knob would be for the slow speed mixture control. It is connected to the slow speed needle valve that adjusts the fuel-air mixture.
Look for a small round plug on the engine block. It may have the model number stamped on it.

Well if you check new motors in iboats store, you/ll see a new 15hp yammerhammer is just shy of 3 grand. If your happy we're happy. If it's been sitting for long period change the impeller.

Good luck and safe boating ya'll

That's a fair price. I'd buy it for that price, myself!
That's also a SUPER motor. The lightest 25hp OMC ever built.
What worries me is you said it runs PRETTY GOOD. It should run REALLY GOOD. What's it doing that you don't like?
Nice motor!:)

Well, I say runs "pretty good" because I've only put it through it's paces in a barrel of water before I bought it. I have not had it on the water yet. I've got to finish a couple of trailer repairs before I can make the maiden voyage with my boat project that started "slowly" earlier this year. Hopefully I can get some welding done this weekend and get the thing out on the water soon. The boat is pretty much done, but I'm going to wait to get in on the water to find final spots for a few of the things. I don't want to "concrete" it all in and then find that it might work better "over there" when I'm on the water.

Doing pretty good though, so far Im in the hole for
16ft Alumicraft and trailer - 450
3 seats and pedestals - 90
deck wood and tintable bed liner - 140
new trailer axle and wheels - 90
42lb thrust minn kota - 100
johnson seahorse (pain in the butt) - 300+ (for sale)
evinrude that runs - 400
anchors, battery and accessories - 100ish
some assembly required

memories with kids and wife - priceless

Re: 1969 Evinrude questions

Hey not quite sure if it has anything to do with my engine but i have a 1969 40hp 40953 that i bought with a glastron skiflight v-142 recently. anyway ive found out that there is a stamped plate right where the transom disconect lever is. (not quite sure if ive said that right but it is the lever that you press to release the outboard to the tilted position for transport). Mine was kinda hard to located at first because i had never owned a boat before two weeks ago and the whole outboard was covered with grease. So i think that relates pretty well with what you've asked but since i've got ya here.....

other things ive had to deal with.
I dont quite know what the correct oil to feul mix is. I was told by the owner 20:1, but ive read here on some other posts its 50:1. as i said i'm really not sure but right now i'm sticking to the 20:1 beause better heavy than light.

The water intake is located in the fin behind the prop. It's the little screen on the front side. So that means "earmuffs" or sometimes called engine cleaner adapters, dont work. you have to stick to the bucket method im sure your doing already.

also ive been able to find the lower lubricant drain plug but not the top. Its located on the underneath side of the tip of the spine. So i dont want to drain it without being able to fill it up again, rendering me unable to flush it.

and by far worst of all. it dies when put into gear, or if it idles too long. i've not quite mastered the throttle well enough for me to keep it running. Ive given it more gas after starting, ive enriched the fuel mix at the carb, ive started it at more throttle, nothing works. it just keeps dieing and i restart until the engine refuses to crank at all or it it does its very slowly... i dont have a boat mechanic in my immediate area, so i'd like to fix it myself, but no manual. any suggestions?

You should start your own post so that people trying to help you don't get you mixed up with the orginal poster. The vent screw to change you lower unit oil is on the starboard side above the cavation plate, it looks just like the drain screw. Make sure to use new gaskets. As far as the idleing problem, your plugs are probably oil fouled, the correct mixture is 50:1, mix proper fuel, install new plugs and see if it will idle properly.

Re: 1969 Evinrude questions

Well, it's been awhile since I was able to finish my project. Some things in life forced me to stick the boat project off to the side for a bit.

Back at it and have the new axle on the trailer, boat is done except the spray in liner and the motor runs great. Ran some fresh gas mix and seafoam through it today. It was a little rough at first from sitting so long, but after idling a bit w/ the seafoam it smoothed out and is now running like a top. Thanks guys for the info provided to help with my project.
