Hey guys,
Recently acquired a 1969 Evinrude 9.5HP Sportwin. It runs but no water spitting out the pee hole. So I'd like to have a look at the impeller. What I have learned from reading so far is place the engine in Reverse pull the 4 retaining bolts the LOWER UNIT - LU will Then drop far enough to expose a coupler, remove one of the bolts and the LU will then slide away from motor. I have done this and the LU has not dropped away at all. The LU will rotate from side to side but no vertical movement. i have tried to persuade the LU with a rubber mallet - No joy. Perhaps I have missed something here. Anyone wishing to share wisdom or knowledge from a similar experience would be appreciated.

Sounds like the drive shaft is seized in the power head. Do you have any Clarence at all between the lower unit and the exhaust housing? Stand the engine on its flywheel (upside down) and try spraying some penetrating oil on the drive shaft and let it run down to the power head, keep doing this and see if it will break loose.

I got it apart.
The drive shaft stayed in the power head. The impeller is keyed to the drive shaft by a tiny paul the upper pump housing has recess which allows the paul to pass during assembly and dissassemly. The paul must point to the rear of the motor if it doesnt
the LU will not come away from the engine without dsmsge or injury. I got lucky. A manual would have been handy here.
