I've been in the business for many years.... never heard of that measurement test. If the flywheel doesn't move sideways, don't bother with it. Now, what problem are you having?

thanks for the response if your pull the flywheel off there is a sticker that says " set sensor gap at .028" what sensor is that refering to? i am wondering if that is why im nor getting a spark when i turn the engine over.

Under the distributor cap, there is a metal rotor attached to the crankshaft. There is also a timing sensor attached to the timer base plate instead of points. The metal rotor has 4 lobes on it. The distance between the sensor and any of those 4 lobes must be no further apart than .028 .

Now, are you going to do the coil test as I suggested above?

yes sir i am in the prosses a lil confused bout rigging a spark tester though. and i bought new plugs for the engine and they are not like standerd plugs they dont have the little hook so there is no way to set a gap, the old plugs i took out are exactly the same is that good or bad?

Do yourself a favor and take those plugs back to the store. Trade them for a set of L77JC4 or QL77JC4.

will do because the advice i was givin in the above thread about the coil didnt work, no spark still. thanks again to all for the information. plugs are cheaper then a coil and easyer to obtain.

(Spark Tester - Home Made)
(J. Reeves)

A spark tester can be made with a piece of 1x4 or 1x6, drive a few finishing nails through it, then bend the pointed ends at a right angle. You can then adjust the gap by simply twisting the nail(s). Solder a spark plug wire to one which you can connect to the spark plug boots, and a ground wire of some kind to the other to connect to the powerhead somewhere. Use small alligator clips on the other end of the wires to connect to ground and to the spark plug connector that exists inside of the rubber plug boot.

Using the above, one could easily build a spark tester whereas they could connect 2, 4, 6, or 8 cylinders all at one time. The ground nail being straight up, the others being bent, aimed at the ground nail. A typical 4 cylinder tester follows:

..........X1..........X2

.................X..(grd)

..........X3..........X4
