I have recently repainted my outboard's cowling with the factory paint and replaced the decals with some replicated decals. Is there a wax or clearcoat or something like that which will keep my paint job and decals protected? It looks so much better than before that I really want it protected from scratches and nicks. I also have a yamaha that I repaired some cowling damage on and I need to put some clear coat on it too. Can you recommend a brand and tell me where to get it? Thanks

In my experience, clear coat yellows with a lot of exposure to the sun. And some may wrinkle your decals. If anything, use a good qality marine wax.

Could you recommend a good wax to use on both cowlings that I need to finish off.

Meguiar's Boat/RV Pure Wax or Flagship Premium Marine Wax.

If you can't find them locally I'll give a gentle plug for our sponsor and note that you can order either of these through iboats.com :)

I bought some today. I tried them out and they make the cowling look shinier. Can I put wax over the decals or should I go around them?

You should not apply wax to Vinyl. It is not recommended by the manufactures. A lot of my customers do clear coat their hoods. This protects the decals and seals the edges. The clear coat may yellow over time if left exposed to the elements. Do not use Lacquer, use enamel or polyurethane. Check with a automotive paint supply store. OMC does have a clear coat but I'm not sure where to find it. If you decide to clear coat make sure you get that wax off.

I have not put the wax on the vinyl but I put some wax on the rest of the cowling. Do I have to take off the wax that is just on the cowling paint before putting a clearcoat on? I got my Yamaha cheap because the cowling was cracked open so I then got it repaired but they didn't put new clearcoat on like the rest of the engine had so I want to put some on. Will the clearcoat still go on if I have waxed the cowling already? I just want to protect my new decals on my 9.5 because they look so good. I've seen it on newer engines and restored 1950's Johnsons and Evinrudes but do you think it would look wierd on this particular engine?

OMC makes a product called levelor, or something like that, I use it on all my re-paints, so far no problems, Just an FYI.
