I removed the cylinder head on this motor to replace it; I recently decarbed it, but it still has a lot in there. I only found one obvious score mark on the lower cylinder. I'm not an expert but I thought the cyl's looked in pretty good shape other than this. What's the best way to remove the heavy carbon deposits? Will more decarbing do it or are more brutal means called for?

The oil pool at the bottom is seafoam that I'd poured inside the cylinder earlier:
I wouldnt worry about that tiny score mark, a lot of motors has them, no problem.

Not sure I follow, you mean those are "normal" carbon deposits?

just give it a good cleaning. those carbon deposits don't look abnormal to me.
some people who pull there heads are in for bigger suprize.
if it where mine i would clean it real good and buy new headgasket and your good to go.
what was the reason you pulled the head in the first place?

If I'm not mistaken, you can still see the honing marks on the bores (swirls). If that's the case, that engine really is in good shape! And those water passages, magnefique!
The bottom of the bottom cylinder - is that just an oil drip there, or is it more sinister?
Those carbon deposits look perfectly normal to me. Looks like a good running engine you have there.

Paul,
Thanks for the info, this is the first outboard I've worked on. The oil drip in the bottom cylinder is just leftover Seafoam that I'd put in the cylinders to clean and loosen things up. I thought those were honing marks, I can see lots of them in both cyl's.

reeldutch,
I'm changing the head because one of the spark plug holes is stripped and I'm getting a head for a decent price. Nothing abnormal there, and looks great for a 69!

Thanks. The consensus seems to be that it looks OK. I probably won't make myself any unnecessary work!
