I bought this motor a month ago and have mounted it on the boat. With all the controls mounted I can turn the motor over and over. I have removed the plugs and can smell gas or perhaps it is just oil from storage.
I was told that this motor has not run in a few years and took it from the gentleman I purchased it from that the coil was bad. So that was the first thing that was replaced.
In the On position, there is no 12v on the entire board. start position doesn't change this either. no power to coil... but there is a clicking noise coming from the amplifier.
The gas bulb doesn't get hard while pumping, it has got to the point that it takes 2-5 mins to return to original shape. is that weird?

I have a multimeter, I am electricaly and mechanicaly capable, I just need some direction.
please help

Re: 1969 85hp Johnson turns over, no fire

I have had much luck poking around both in I boats and in my local area of SW Ontario. There are a great number of helpful boaters out there writing answers and helping us out... Big thanks!

So I have narrowed the issue, with much help, to the dreaded amplifier.

I have read many forum threads that led me to believe there is a conversion to an automotive coil and a really big resistor. It does make sense, and it increases the voltage in the spark.
Has anyone had any luck with this mod?

I am most likely going to find a used amp or aftermaket one to replace my burn POS amplifier.

thought I would update the thread

Before you go crazy with a change over, check the two wires that go from the amplifier up under the flywheel to the sensor. I've seen where the insulation on wires that are anchored to the timing arm break from age and the constant moving. The sensor signal is then grounded out. No sensor signal no spark.
