Howdy, jw. First find the shift rod. It's a vertical rod on the right side of the engine under the cover. See if it goes up and down equal distances when you shift your control into For'd and Rev. The connection to your cable from the controller may have slipped, or the controller may have slipped it's control of the shift cable. If the shift rod is moving up and down equal distances and it isn't going into Rev. the trouble is with the dog clutch or shifting clevis in the lower end.

Good luck.
JB

Your 69 85 has a hydro-electrical gearcase. It shifts on oil pressure. If it is stuck in forward all the time it's most likely not getting power to the solenoids in the gearcase. It is normaly in forward gear with no power to the gearcase. There are two wires on the port side coming from the gearcase. If you have forward and neutral but no reverse then you may have a switch problem or a bad wire.

Disconnect the two wires from the gear case. There is a blue and green wire. I can't remember which is neutral but here's how it works:
No power to gearcase is forward.
Power to one wire is neutral.
Power to both wires is reverse.

You can check this without the motor running using a test light. I know it sounds complicated but it's an extremely simple unit. I think it's easier than the straight electric shift.

If it turns out to be the push button shift switch, make sure you get the right one as the switch for the straight electric looks the same as the hydro-electrical.

Also make sure you have the correct oin in the gearcase. It's very important.

Check out the power and let us know. There are several other things that can cause this but lets hope it something easy like a wire or switch.

Good luck!

Re: 1969 85hp evinrude

I am having the exact problem with my 69, 85HP evinrude. It is stuck in forward. I am going to use the advice that Dhadley gave. I was wondering though, Dhadley, you say make sure you are using the correct gear oil in the gearcase. Can you tell me what the correct oil would be. I am using the oil that the marina sold me. it is made by 'mercury' and called 'premium gear lube.' It says it is marine grade. A buddy of mine told me the older evinrudes use a lighter weight oil. This gear lube i have doesn't say what the weight is. can you, or anyone else, tell me the oil I need. Please be specific as I am not too savvy on engines. thanks!

oil for electric shift lower unit is indeed lighter weight, and not interchangeable with the regular oil (hypoid 90?) -- instructions will specify that it is for electric shift gearcases (Look for the one with that instruction).

Re: 1969 85hp evinrude

In reference to the engine only going in forward (no reverse or neutral), I have another question. ... I have located the wires in question (the green and the blue) in the gear case. I am going to test them with a test light. Do I need to disconnect the battery before I test the wires? It seems like I woudn't but I want to make sure before I end up zapping myself. thanks again.
