1969 55 hp johson has me MAD!!!!

i cant seem to figure this one out. boat starts and runs on muffs. put it in the lake runs for minute then its like someone turns the key off, then it may or maynot start again. all 3 cyclinders are about 125 psi, ive re-wired most of the motor. they were old and briitle thought this might be my problem. SO WRONG!!! when it runs it runs GOOD. it ran all day ONLY one day. i do smell gas every once in awhile. if anyone knows what might be the problem PLEASE PLEASE LET ME KNOW! could this be a cable or a wire in the igniation? or maybe the coil? these parts for this boat isnt cheap so try finding problem before i go in the hole with new parts and a boat that still wont run. also it done this before i re-wired it

Remove flywheel.--Remove stator and distributor cap.-----Clean and set the points at 0.010".---Inspect anti reversing spring.----Clean distributor cap and rotor..--Reinstall the works and torque flywheel.
