After a 10 year hiatus due to a failed entrance with a "free" trihull.. I came back!

This time hopefully armed with a bit more knowledge and determination and a much better starting point. I brought home a 1969 22' Starcraft Islander w a 120hp mercrusier . She looks to have been relatively well cared for and had a pretty decent start at a restoration.

Went to pick it up yesterday and was pleased everything thing was as stated and disclosed from what I can tell. Put her on muffs and the 4cyl fired right up. Engine sounded good, no issues with the mercrusier MC outdrive and she shifted ok. She is going to need the outdrive and engine pulled to address the bad transom. It looks to have been done previously and someone had the foresite to do a great job of making the rear transom's cap able to be removed by drilling the rivets to access the wood transom from the looks of it.

Didnt these boats come with an hour meter? Doesn't matter I guess it's a 52year old boat. I have a back up mercrusier 188hp with a mercrusier MC outdrive courtesy of my "free" junk trihull..

Anyone able to point me to where the HIN would be? Found the plate w/serial number. It came with title and the registration number matched. Came from Indiana and need to title &register in Ohio. Don't want any issues.

I had a '65 18' Holiday with the little 4 cyl Mercruiser. Replaced transom (and the deck...floor... and other things). Pretty straight forward process. A lift, like one used to replace the engine in a car would be helpful....have one now, didn't then, Harbor Freight sells them.

While the outdrive is off, service the lower unit and the gimbal....get new boots for the exhaust and drive shaft....replacing was a daunting task for me at the time, being a first timer to do it...getting the hoses on and getting to the clamps on the outdrive end.....as the last item after everything else was in place......and in the way!

The boat had been neglected and was floating in a marina, transom area was full of water, some of which was around the engine. Oil was yellow and I expected the worst but as it turned out I lucked out. I didn't have to go into the short block but did give it a good flushing and a few oil changes, but did have the head redone at a machine shop. Replaced starter and probably alternator...don't remember, and other engine items that require servicing normally from time to time.

That little Chevy 4 is a tough engine and she performed smooth as silk, zero problems after the restoration. Will say this though, 110 hp wasn't all that much and a 120 on your 22' isn't either. A 140 4 would have been a good power plant for my 18'.. Your idea about your 188 is not a bad idea...with it's outdrive. You'll be much happier (opinion) and find yourself backing off the throttle rather than wishing you had more..............and folks can remain in the jump seats when you pull a couple of slalom skiers out of the hole. Wink!

A HIN wasn't required prior to 31 Oct 1972, so your boat likely doesn't have one. IF you do, it would be in the upper right corner of the stern when viewed from outside the rear of the boat.
