Can anyone tell me where to put oil in the lower unit? Is it the plug on the front right side of the lower unit? and if i take out that plug what should come out?
I think i have abused the motor and need to give it somw TLC.
Also, there is a plug that has "FLUSH" below it. Whats that for?

Hi Murray,
There are two screws you'll need to remove to drain and refill the lower unit. One is a dime-sized slot-head screw located on the front-bottom of the gearcase bullet. The second is a smaller slotted screw, usually round headed, located just above the antiventilation plate. The bottom is the drain and fill hole, the upper is the vent. Fill from the bottom until it comes out the top.
The flush hole is for saltwater use. Mercury made an attachment that would thread into that hold to allow you to run the motor on a garden hose to flush out salt.
- Scott

Scott,

The way i read your note: "Fill from the bottom until it comes out the top." is that the "top" if the fill hole? as that is lower than the "vent"

ps, i have ordered a manual :)

I have a '69 Merc 7.5 hp just like yours. My manual has a photo showing the motor in a "up -tilt position (approx. 45 degrees) and states the following regarding "Lower Unit Lubrication":

"Periodically lubricate the lower drive unit with Kiekhaefer EXTRA-DUTY Quicksilver Outboard Gear Lubricant (Part No. C-92-32641) as follows:

1. Remove lubricant filler plug (bottom screw plug), located on the right side of the gear housing just above the skeg, and then remove air vent screw above the anti-cavitation plate (top screw plug), being careful not to lose the accompanying washers.

Never apply lubricant to the lower unit without first removing the air vent screw, as the injected lubricant displaces air which must be allowed to escape, otherwise the gear housing cannot be completely filled as required.

2) Insert the lubricant tube into filler plug hole (lower plug) and inject lubricant until excess fluid starts to flow out of the air vent screw hole (top plug), indicating that the housing is filled.

3) Replace air vent screw (top plug)first, then filler plug (bottom plug), taking special care that the washer is in place under the head of each so that water will not leak past the threads into the gear housing.

Do this every 25 hours of operation or at least once a year."

I hopes this helps! Remember that it is done with the motor tilted up at an 45 degree angle.

If you need any other information I think my manual should have it as well.

No - the fill hole is BELOW the vent. The fill hole is on the bottom of the gearcase bullet.... If you're pulling another screw out that is ABOVE the vent screw, then you're removing the wrong screw...
- Scott
