1968 merc 65 charging troubles

ok heres the deal
i have 16.5 v ac coming out of the two yellow stator wires
nothing dc coming out the red wire
is that all there is to this chargeing system the stator and the rectifier?
the red wire goes to the battery?
also i have continuity between the yellow wires
but i have continuity from ground to the rd wire (still conected to the rectifier
getting dark at the time i was working on it

any help would be great

You have a shorted rectifier. The circuit is that simple.

Yes, all it does is charge the battery, it sounds like the rectifier is blown. The red wire should have 12v between it and ground (-) when the switch is turned on, if not there's a problem with your wiring or the key switch. I had to replace a switch from 5pole (NLA) to 4 and I just wired the red rectifier lead to the (+) terminal inside the motor.
The rectifier can be damaged by shutting off the engine above 1200 rpm.

one more question
im looking on ebay for a rectifier and all i can find are the diamond shape ones.... mine is square three post
will the diamond one work provided i mount it with a good ground?

thanks for the help allready guys i was thinking rectifier but needed some input before i bought one

Yes, the negative (-) lead on the rectifier will go to ground and the (+) lead to your battery connection. The two leads marked AC go to the yellow wires.
