I have been thinking I have a cooling issue with my newly aquired 100hp Johnson so I pulled the thermostat housing off to check for water flow. With the engine running zero water came out. I have watched a few videos on changing them but I can't find one for this engine, is it similar to newer model Johnsons? If I pull the lower unit off it should be self explanatory, correct? Do they still make an impeller for this engine ? I know they don't make a lot of other parts for it, but I'm hoping the impeller is still available.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

EDIT: It has the electric shift lower unit. I have read a few articles on changing the impellers, but they all have the shift linkage that has to be removed prior to dropping the lower unit, what would the procedure be for mine?

You drop the lower unit the same as you would with a manual shift except you have to attact something to the shift wires so that you can pull them back up when you put the lower unit back on.
You should be able to get an impeller for that engine.

Be careful with the wires as they're getting old and frail.

The thermostat in that model is called a vernatherm (Fig 102 in pic). Water flows from the cylinider heads "to" the thermostat housing.

AH, I see. That explains why I would have water from the heads but not from the housing. Do these thermostats go bad? When I had my housing apart I was going to drop it in some hot water to test it but couldn't figure out how to,lol. I'm not really sure what to look for.

Thanks for the help guys !! I really appreciate it.

Have the small pin compressed into the vernatherm, then sit the vernatherm in hot (very hot) water. The pin should raise up/out somewhat.

The pin rose up , but never went back down after cooling off. Looks like I need to grab a new one.

The pin does not go back down by itself, hence the needed spring. Push it back in when it cools off.

I assumed it needed help to go back in, and I tried forcing it back in ( I used what I thought was equal pressure as the spring ) and it would not budge. I'll push harder and see what happens :)

It doesn't require much pressure... should move freely. If you can simply pull it out, you should be able to push it back in.

I can pull it out , but when I push it back in it will only go in maybe half as deep as it did before I tested it in hot water.

Oh, ok.... Sounds like it could be stuck open then. You can tell for sure by placing it where it normally goes, then place the center plate and seat on top of it. If the seat is in the open position, it's stuck open... in which case replace it.
