I just aquired a 1968 Johnson 3hp, is there someone who can direct me to the basic engine specs? Proper fuel mix? Spark plug gap?

I havent had a chance to get into this motor much to see what if anything is wrong with it, is this motor worth the time it would take to sell it, or use as a kicker motor for a 16ft fiberglass boat?

Thanks.

Nice little motor and very popular. They will usually bring more money than the standard leg model. If you have the carrying case, that's even better. Set points to .020"/ plugs to .030". Mix is 50:1 gas:eek:il for that motor. Use TCW-3 oil for best results.

Spark plugs should be Champion J4C.

Because the JW (3HP) series engines still used sleeve bearings on the small ends of the rods until 1970, several of our most respected JohnnyRude wrenches recommend 24:1 for pre-1970 JW series engines.

Right now on ebay there is one for $99 that has not received a single bid and one some guy wants $1250 for with the same result. But the second one is described as "Awesome Rare" and has the carry case.

They are ok and cute. It will push your boat around (sorta), but smoke up the place in the process.

You talking about that white one with the green lower cowl? Well, he is selling a pig in a poke with no assurance whatsoever that it is good for anything other than junk. A running JW in good condition will bring considerably more than that, especially a folding one.

BTW, they are one of the sweetest and smoothest running motors ever built. Smoke? I guess that depends on your point of view. They aren't THAT bad. ALL motors smoked back in those days. That was before people got all bent out of shape over a bit of smoke and oil. We were a lot happier too. Maybe that's just my viewpoint. Well, OK, we were teaching our kids to hide under their desks in case of an atomic bomb attack, but that's a different topic.

In a couple posts you mention "JW" I assume this is the first letters to the model #. This motor's model # is JHF23A is this different from the JW series?

Sorry about that, AM. Yes, the JH is the same as the JW and the JHF was the folding version.

As F_R says, they were/are the best little outboard ever made, by anyone, anytime. I never had an outboard of any size by any maker that was even close to my JW as a sweet running, smooth and quiet little hummer.

A really good one, demonstrated to be a runner, is worth several hundred bux plus some extra for the carry case.

Nope, JH and JW are NOT the same. JW has the weedless lower unit. JH has the right angle drive. Evinrude called their version of the JH a "Yachtwin" and promoted it for auxillary motor use, especially sailboats. The weedless JW is the fishing motor. Not to say that you can't fish with a JH. The JW and JH are the same from the water pump up, but totally different from there down.

It’s worth what you can get. I’ve one too. For sale. Running. With case. What is it worth?
