1968 Johnson 40 shift/throttle cable questions

I have a 1968 40 horse model Rd-30d. I am trying to find the correct shift cable and/or fittings to attach to my shifter on the side of my outboard. UPDATE: So I think I found something similar to what I need... Here is the link.

What confuses me is it ays 35 hp and lower and 1973-1979. Mine is a 1968 and a 40 hp...??? Is this the right part? ANd why does this part have to be 4 times as much as all the others?


I also need to know what I am missing on my throttle cable end... I put the end of the cable over the knob off my engines throttle connection but it keeps popping up and off... Is there some kind of retainer clip or something that holds it there??? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

The shifter that I need a cable and whatever goes on the end of the cable to attach to this shifter.

That one will probably work. Any cable with ends up to about 1978 should work. Yes, you are missing the retaining clip on your throttle cable. Check Ebay. Don't know how much you need, but here is a complete shift unit I saw on Ebay with the proper cable ends:

Go to http://shop.evinrude.com/ Click on Electronic Parts Catalog, Then click on the down arrow where it defaults to Evinrude. Select OB Accessories from the drop-down list. Pick an old one (1972). Select Remote Control from the list. Select Remote Controls, Single motor. A-ha!! a complete parts list for your enjoyment.

Thanks for the replies...I have done some searching on ebay and a few other sites for the retainer clip for my throttle but I am unsure of which one to purchase...any help with the exact one? I am going to be purchasing a set of cables today for my control box off ebay...the johnson pre 1979 set...



Anyone know where to find the shifter cable ends I need for less than the 45-55 I keep seeing? Or somewhere that sells the cables with the ends already on them? I already have an old johnson control box that I am going to be using.

I don't know if the old style ends are available anymore. That's why I suggested Ebay for a complete set. I've done that before. Bought a whole set, took off the parts I needed, and sold the rest. You could post a free want-ad on AOMCI.org. Go to their Webvertize (free classifieds) and see what happens.
