Will the engine continue to run if you constantly pump the fuel primer bulb?

Trouble shooting.......

Check compression which should approach 100 psi. Should also be fairly even on both cylinders. What do you have?

S/plugs removed.... Spark should jump a 1/4" gap on that model with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP! Does it?

If the above two areas are as they should be, it's possible that the carburetor may simply be out of adjustment (as follows), but if not, then the carburetor may be fouled and require cleaning.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Re: 1968 johnson 20hp

Hey i have a FD-22M(m as in manual i believe) 1968 johnson 20hp. I have not run it in a few years but i took it out of the garage and i am now re diagnosing. Same thing use to happen to me when i got my little 14 skiff 3 years ago. So what ive come to is that when i took the thermostat housing cap off(a couple days ago), it was extremely corroded inside and the thermostat(tstat) was completely destroyed(i believe my engine has only been run in salt water by previous owners). Not only that but the shafts were the water pumps through, were corroded with a mm or two of build up. I shaved as much of the debris out that i could get to, without taking off the powerhead. Obviously the tstat need to be replaced and with a new seal. I found the parts for around 25-30 dollars online. Im hoping this is an easy fix. A couple years ago i took the lower end off and checked the pump. There was no grit or wear down. Check this link out
http://www.leeroysramblings.com/johnson_E-FD_15_18hp.html

I have heard that older mechanics usually just take the whole thermostat out but from further reading it can really damage your engine further. So im hopefully ordering the tstat today. A friend told me to just place the tstat in with the seal ring, no grease or nothin. But to make sure that you put sealer on the gasket. (I think you can even buy a new housing cap too). Now if your tstat doesnt look bad then he says to test it by putting it in hot water and seeing if it opens up. I believe the tstat sends hot water to the top of the powerhead to keep it at the same temp so that the pistons and chambers dont morph from the temperature difference. Let me know if you have any luck because obviously it sounds like were in the same boat, going nowhere..

forgot to also mention that if tstat is good then mostly likely the only other problem is the fuel pump which i was told to replace after testing the tstat

HI Sacco. I have a '66 20 hp myself. If the fuel pump is ok, then the carb will need to be rebuilt, which isn't a bad idea anyway. You can get a rebuild kit here at iboats for about $20. Of course, the motor may also be dying due to ignition components failing due to excess heat. All original OMC coils failed over time, but the new replacement coils will last forever and only cost about $20 ea. In addition to the links above these may help.
