I just purchased a 55hp 1968 evinrude and I was told it was a 4-stroke but after looking closer I can't seem to find where the oil dip stick is so I can change the oil. Now someone told me it is a 2-stroke can someone please help me?? I don't know anything about this motor. It runs good but I don't think it has had an oil change in a long time it has a lot of white smoke when I fire it up. Any info would help....

It is a 2-stroke. Oil is mixed with the gas at a 50:1 fuel oil ratio. It will blow up if oil is not mixed with the gas. It also need to be in the water or be on a garden hose adapter to run or you will ruin the water pump.

Thank you for helping me out!! The person I got this motor off said you don't need to mix oil, I just hope he didn't kill the engine on me. Thank you again for your wisdom!

+1. Always mix oil with your gas in a 2 stroke motor. However, the exact ratio may vary by make and model. Most OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) motors from the early-mid 50s run a 16:1 mix, mid 50's-early 60's generally run a 24:1 mix and motors from the late 60s-present generally run 50:1. There will be a small chart on the back of the 2-stroke oil container that will tell you how many fl. oz. of oil to add to every gallon of 87 octane gas (no need to run high octane gas. In fact low octane is better.). When in doubt, it's always better to err on the side of caution and add a little extra oil to the motor. It may smoke a bit more, but it won't do any harm.
