Did as much research as I could on this one, but need some confirmation. My new (old) 33 hp evinrude is a pull start, I know I don't need to explain the problem with that. I have a starter from a 1972 40 hp that straps on like a glove, and I did the research and found both motors call for the same crankshaft, my question, will the 40 horse flywheel match up and work on the 33. Secondly, the bottom of the motor, right below the power head has an opening exposing the bottom of the head. Is this just a crappy design or is it missing an access panel or some kind of plate. Thank you in advance. Ronnie from R.I.

I am reasonable sure the starter and flywheels are the same.

Do you mean the hole in the belly pan, under the carburetor??? It is supposed to have a silencer over it. See it and other parts diagrams at http://shop.evinrude.com/

I attached 2 pics. pic 1 looking down with my hand under, pic 2 looking up, white is sky. I checked all the diagrams and couldn't see anything that would go here, this could definatly allow seawater to enter on a snotty day. Thanks for all your insight on the flywheel, I did see a "toothed" ring that could be added to the flywheel, (if I could find one), but the adapter on the starter I have from the fourty will fit the 33, so I will try the 40 flywheel for a fit and if she looks good I'll torque her down, cross the fingers and push the button. Ronnie

Re: 1968 evinrude 33 hp flywheel

You have a good eye tashasdaddy, the power head plate is missing ( along with several other minor parts. This thing really is a mess. The only good news I have is it doesn't look like this motor has been in salt. I think before I spend another dime I will install the starter and the flywheel and check the compression, if its good I'll go from there. Does anyone reading this have a good source for used, hard to find parts, like a power head plate for a '68 evinrude 33?

tcoutboard.com. you can do the compression test with a rope start.
