1968 Erude 40hp Lark - Voltage regulator.

I just took the top off my voltage regulator. It looks ugly, corroded and in need of help. Is there a bench test I can perform on the unit? My motor is dismantled so it must be a bench test. It is a deleted part in Australia last priced at AU$596.00. Thanks.

Yes it should be possible to bench test the regulator, do you have access to a variable power supply? If so I will email you how to connect it up to test the reg. If you want a new one, just sit tight for a few weeks, I am building a new one for mine, it won't be hard to make two. (I love being a tech ) certainly shouldn't cost as much as oem.

bit concerned that your reg goes to 14.6v at 1500rpm, what does it go to at higher revs? Too high in the output will damage your battery. 13.8v is ideal no matter what the rpm.

No problem , just change the Zener diode ( D6 )down to 12v ( using 13v now ).<br />Might move the power in also , now running 3m of thin wire (1,5mm2 ),might be some voltage drop in that wire . <br />The powerhead are just rebuid , so I have not been over 1500 rpm ,yet , the voltage shuld NOT go any higher.

My problem is that I have no idea what I am looking at or how/why it works. Although I should add that I am very impressed by the info provided by Droll even though I haven't got a clue what to do with it.

A few people here have used a regulator from a 1960 Ford Falcon here. Search the forum for 'Ford Regulator' and you'll find some good information.<br />I don't know how common old Ford parts are down under though...
