My latest entry for "Stupid Question Of The Week" award! I would like to test my eletric shift while I have the lower unit off. Is the following procedure a legitimate test? 1.Ground a lead from negative battery terminal to the lower unit. <br />2.Run positive lead to green lower unit cable. 3. Turn drive shaft in clockwise direction and prop should turn for forward motion. 4. Move positive lead from green (forward) lower cable to blue (reverse)cable. 5.Turn drive shaft in clockwise direction and prop should turn for reverse motion. I have no controls yet but I would like to test gears before I re-assemble. Thanks.

Should work jai. Just remember that you'll have to turn the prop a few turns to get the clutch spring wound up around the prop shaft.

Maybe I'm not as silly as I thought I was. This test worked briliantly and the electric shift did exactly what I had hoped. A small victory on a long road. Thanks.

Re: 1968 40HP Erude - Electric Shift Test.

Greetings from the sky blue waters.

I have some questions about a 1969 Johnson electromatic 40 hp. Model
40ESL69R, serial # J2992803.

Replaced the water pump and got a little carried away and disconnected the lower unit from the top water pump extension. How do you tell about how to connect the lower unit wires to the right ones. Two white wires from the lower unit and a green one and another from the top extension. Does it make a difference in shifting the unit from F to R? How to test for current?
What oil for lower unit should I use?

Thanks Gary

It is strange to have two white wires going to the lower unit, that being said, the default mode should be no power on either wire forward, power on the green neutral and power on the blue reverse. If you drive the lower unit and apply power to one wire you will get one direction, connect the correct wire to it then connect the other wire to the remaining one. Those use premium type c lower unit lube.

Correction two white wires from the lower unit. Green one from the upper housing and another color. What goes where? White to green or white to blue what side? I know I messed up. I was in the Navy 61 to 65 RD 3.

Thanks Gary

The coil wires in the lower case should be blue and green. If they are white, who knows who has been in there and done what? They probably did like 90% of the amatures that go in those things and broke the wires off.

Anyhow, you have a 50% chance of getting them right. If it shifts backwards, reverse the connections at the top end and don't tell anybody.
