I built a small 8' boat, and just got a 1802s for it. I ordered a manual, but being impatient I wanted to try running it this weekend. I hate to do this as a first post but can I ask a couple questions?

1. Is the mix ratio 50:1?

2. Motor was in great shape but there was no pull rope. Not sure if my jury rig is right. How long was the pull rope on them?

3. What lube does the shaft use?

Could not find by post search, do not want to mess it up before I get a manual. If I have to I will wait on the manual, just want to run it a little.

Yes 50:1 using a TCW3 outboard oil.

Probably about 2ft or a little less will be about right. experiment.

80/90 outboard gear oil for the gearcase (but I use EP90 automotive oil)

Check it's not overheating. There's no telltale but you should get a little water, just a mist or a few droplets, out of the exhaust relief hole. If it turns to steam it's overheating. A new pump impeller would be wise anyway if it has not been changed recently.

If there is water in the gear oil then it will need new seals. They always advise new washers on drain/level plugs every time they are removed. (but mine are original since 1984. I promise to change them next time though)

Plug J6C at 0.030". Points 0.020" I think

Thanks Vic, just what I needed. Appreciate the reply. I am changing the impeller, just was going to wait until I had the manual.

I agree with the advice you've been given thus far except for one issue. Do not use automotive gear lubricant. Automotive systems have plenty of room for expansion due to foaming and agitation of the lubricant. Marine systems do not have provisions for that. Use only the "good stuff" from a reputable marine supply house, anything designed for that use from Evinrude, Johnson or Mercury will work fine. Fill the unit from below, not above, that forces out any trapped air pockets. Messy, yes. No air pockets is worth the mess.

Well the oil I use supposedly contains anti-foaming additives! Certainly not had any problems in the past 30 years with it!

However it is interesting that you mention filling from the bottom (the normal method with an outboard gear box) because the diagram for this motor only shows one plug! SEE DIAGRAM
