Hello,
Thanks so far for all the help on this forum! Now my question is related to installing the lower unit. I replaced the water pump, and upon reinstall, I only have 1 gear, forward. In the instructions I have, It says to turn the shift shaft 1 way while turning the propeller the other to get it into forward gear before reinstalling. There is a problem with that for me, my shift shaft is still attached to the motor, not the lower unit. Is there a procedure for still doing this? I appreciate all the help. Thanks, Steve

Hmm, I do not think that this looks too good.
If I see the picture correctly, Looks like the shift shaft from the lower unit is stuck in the end of the shaft tha rnds down the body of the motor
It should remain in the lower unit when you pull it off.
It should be connected to the shift cam inside the lower unit.
I am not expert but you may have to pull the lower unit apart to get it back right.

I have the exact same problem. Did you solve this or does anyone know how to correct this without tearing apart the lower unit?

Also, looks like water supply tube is loose from the bottom of engine block.
You might consider hunting an "old-school" technician to help you with this situation. I personally would not break into a lower unit on my own since some special tools are involved. Just my 2 cents. Others may disagree with my post. Good Luck
