1967 Johnson RDSL 29 Lower Gear Case

I am trying to get the lower gear case off of this 40 HP Super Sea Horse motor. I have the service manual and I'm close. I can't find where the shifter disconnects. There is a diagram referred to, but I can't find where to actually disconnect it. The extension and gear case have cleared about an inch and I can see two water tubes and another rod I thought was the drive shaft. I have a crack in the housing right at the propeller shaft and I want to check for any damage I might have cause.

Should be an access on the 'leg' above the extension where you access the shift rod coupler. take the top side bolt OUT of the coupler, as the shiftshaft is grooved, and then you can pull the lower unit off. Driveshaft stays w/lower unit, and should separate easily from powerhead (splined shaft)

That an you need to remove the rear cover on the leg, there is a hidden bolt behind the cover if you don't already have it out.

Service manual says take out the lower screw. It shows the groove on the bottom. You guys have been right on the money so far and the manual has been wrong.

Manual was right on the shift linkage. Now is this skeg weld able?

You could have it welded but the povot screw is right there. Why not find a replacement.I believe it is a pretty common part used for many years and models.

I found it for $295.00 I paid $500.00 for the entire boat, motor, and trailer. I can have it welded by a top notch for free. Just don't know if it's going to work. The bosses are going to get moved around. I might have to fork out the cash for a new one. Going to try and fix the old one first.

Got the welding done. The skeg warped around a little, but I think this is going to work. Won't know until I put a seal kit in and reassemble.I was lucky, I have a mold welder as a friend and he did it for nothing. Good penetration all the way inside, so I can grind off most of the weld.

Guess you'll know once it's rebuilt, exact result or possible internal catastrophy, the warp worries me, I guess you'll spot it if it's bad enough.
