we were out on the boat today and when we were going thru the no wake zone it would slip out of forward gear into neutral for about 5 minutes then it just quit going into forward. It would go into reverse but not forward. I checked the switch and also put power to the wires heading down to the lower unit under the power head and rev only locked up, forward still spun free so i'm guessing something happened with either the solenoid or the wire going to the solenoid. I hear that an ohm reading of 4-7 is good on the solenoid... it read 1.8. does that mean the solenoid is shot? any help would be great!!!

I don't think your engine has shift solenoids. It uses electric coils and springs to shift. If you put voltage to the green wire it should shift into forward, voltage to the blue wire it should shift into reverse. Do not apply voltage to both wires at the same time.
Can you post your model number?

Yes, it is a 1967. If you are applying voltage at the connector that goes down to the lower unit, and it will not shift into forward, you are going to have to drop the lower unit and inspect the forward coil, hub and spring. Could be a broken wire in the lower unit.

Disconnect the shift wires at the side of the engine (starboard side) where they go down into the midsection. Try jumping voltage to one wire at a time at that point. If it works OK there, then the problem is somewhere between there and the remote shifter. If it still doesn't work, then you are going to have to drop the lower unit and keep troubleshooting. It is possible to have a pinched or bare shift wire, especially if the lower end has been dropped for maintenance.

i did try it at the side of the engine and it still wont shift into forward...i was affraid of having to drop the lower unit!lol can you still buy the coils for this motor or is it gonna be a salvage part that will be hard and expensive to find? thanks for the fast replies, looking at the lower unit diagram- it looks like the forward coil is the 3rd piece from the front of the gearcase!

a pinched wire would make sense since the ohms reading on that wire is only 1.8...lets hope its that simple!

If it is a pinched or bare wire, you could repair that for MUCH less than the cost of a replacement lower unit (even a cheap $200 replacement) and it doesn't take too long to inspect.
