I was just given a 9.2 HP sea king Model VWB-19078A (1966). The motor is like new and has not been used for many years. There is ignition spark. I am not sure what preservation steps if any were taken, so I am concerned about just starting it up and possibly doing some damage.I have changed the gearbox lube and Have greased some of the obvious spots. Someone recommed putting a small amount of oil in the cylinders to coat the walls prior to starting, would this help if there is rust or corrosion?
Can anyone advise me on key checks or maintaniance steps before re-starting a motor that has been stored for many years.

Check out the Awakening a Sleeping Outboard thread in the Engine FAQ section of this site/forum. It'll walk you through it step by step.

After checking waking sleeping outboards be sure to ask any further questions. There are some pretty smart folks here.
Just wanted to add your motor was built by Chrysler.Chrysler purchased
West Bend circa 65. 66 was first year for Chrysler production.Later became Force circa 85.Parts can be tricky to find but they are out there.

I just acquired the actual Chrysler version of the 9.2. Mine is a 1967. I picked it up for $30 and have been tinkering with it since. I have checked compression, greased all fittings, changed lower end oil, re-greased/set the recoil. Only thing I have NOT done is start it. let me know if I can be of any service OR if you need any pics taken for reference.

Thanks for the good advice.

I just had the motor out for a check out run and had a few problems and some new questions. After first have hour of operation I shut down and after re-starting I needed to keep choke 1/4 out to keep it running. Does this mean I now need to clean the carb.

Also, I took the conservative (more oil is better ) route but does anyone know what the correct fuel mixture is. 24:1 or 50:1.

Also, any recommendations for a propeller upgrade.

Also, I am looking to get a copy of the manuals any recommendations.

You should go through the fuel system from tank to carb.If you just do the carb the system could just foul it up again.
Fuel mix is 24:1.
Prop change would depend on your present prop size usually on the barreel or under the prop nut.To do it right for the health of your motor and best performance you need a tach, tinytach is reasonable and easy to install,
And a gps for speed check.
If you read the stickies at the top of the prop forum and the helps
at the iboats prop store page it will help you understand prop selection.
I get my manuals off ebay.Usually aftermarket manuals that cover many brands. You might find some at the library.Chrysler info will serve you well.
