I just got a 1966 Merc 60, 6hp. It looks new. I was told it probably had less than 20 hours on it (looks like it). I was also told it had not been run for about 25 years. Anyway, I filled the cylinders with mystery oil and let it set a while. I then put it in the tank, and after a dozen pulls, it fired right up and idled great!

One problem, no water was coming out the exhaust, or the **** hole (Where is this hole anyway??).

I took the flush plug out. It was very difficult to remove, and when it was out, the hole was plugged with some sort of whitish residue. I dug the junk oit with a screwdriver. Poured in some water, and blew it out with air. I then put it back in the tank, and fired it up. Water started pouring out the flush hole. I plugged the hole, and still no water out the exhaust.

Any idea what is going on here?? What is this white stuff? How do I get the water to come out the exhaust????

Thanks.

1966?.....make sure you have a tell tale (pisser) typically under the cowl on starboard side (not always) but most that I have owned. DO not run that thing until you find it, or verify that it does not have one. An engine sitting that long can have mouse homes, insect hives...many many things that can clog and impede good water circulation. That is my 2 cents...there are guys on here MUCH more knowledgeable than I, I just did not want you to overheat and wipe out a good engine!

I would recommend picking up a manual on it first. From the manual, determine if the tell tale stream is controlled by a thermostat. If so, I would remove the thermostat from the housing and check it for proper functioning. How long did you let it run before you turned it off? Was the water entering the motor pretty cold?

I cannot locate a pisser hole on either side. On the starboard side there are 2 small slit openings toward the front of the motor.

This AM, I tried to "flush" out the engine through the flush hole. I raised up the motor, Put the hose in the flush hole, and water came out the inlet just above the prop, and out the center of the prop. Nothing came out the exhaust on the top back side of the housing.

I stuck it back in the tank, and fired it up. Water was coming out the flush hole. I stuck the hose in the flush hole, and no water was coming out the exhaust. I shut it off.

BTW, I only run it less than a minute so as not to overheat it.

Is is possible that the water pump impeller has enough power to push water out the flush hole and not the pee hole or exhaust?

The manual says to check the pee hole on the right side of the engine. (Right side looking at it, or the other way??) It says it is ok to run if the hole is plugged as long as water is coming out the exhaust on the back of the shaft housing.

With the engine up, I took the air compressor hose, and blew air in the center of the prop, Water came out the flush hole, and some air came out the exhaust hole on the back of the housing.

I am still stumped. And to top it off, somehow the tiller handle got into a locked position. I can not turn the motor from left to right. This is OK if you want to go in a straight line I guess. I looked for a tiller lock or release, and cannot find one. Any help here?

Thanks

Good point on the thermostat. I will see if I can find a shp manual. I have the original owners manual, but it is pretty vague.

I only ran it less than a minute. Maybe 30-45 seconds.

Yes the water was cold. Probably in the 40 to 50 degree range.

Thanks.

That motor doesn't have a thermostat; I would drop the lower unit and replace the impeller and any damaged waterpump parts. All the flush hole does is run water thru the motor (when it's not running) to flush out salt water/silt etc. You don't run the motor with the flush plug out. It sounds like you have a waterpump problem.
The steering problem could be because screw #29 in this diagram has seized. http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/399_15.cfm

That impeller has to be as dry as a piece of jerky, they're only a few bucks and it would be real good insurance to have a new one in there. The rubber dries out and takes the form of the water pump and no longer pumps water efficiently. The impeller has many arms, a dry one can start to rip. Even if it works today, it may not in the near future.

You have to remove the lower unit, putting it back on the right way, getting the shifter right, and getting the reverse on correctly can be tricky. If you remove the LU mark your reverse cam with a marker, it can go back on a dozen different ways. Also put your LU in neutral and be sure that your prop spins freely before you put it back on. Some guys have other techniques too, some like reverse instead.

My motor sat for 12 years and I got it going without too much trouble, a new inpeller and new LU oil was my first investment.
