I have a 1966 Johnson 80 electradrive(V4AL18C)
I have started this motor out of the water (with the hose attatched for cooling) After running for approx 2 min there was an oily substance with water running out of 2 small holes on the left side of the lower leg. One hole is about level with the prop the other about 2 inch above it and slightly larger. Have I got a seal problem or is this draining out of the exhust somewhere? Also is there supposed to be water flowing out of the motor somewhere? I couldnt see any could my water pump be faulty? I was only running it at idle for maybe 2 -3 min. It seemed to run ok.
Thanks again for your help in advanced.
Murray

I have ordered a workshop manual but wont get it for 2 weeks so Im asking on here.

Re: 1966 Johnson 80 question

Hi muz
The ball park method I use for temp. check is to dip a handful of water. Then drizzle over the cylender and head area. Small puddddles will form in the castings. If these puddles/drops sizzle or disappeer fast, then your too hot. If they just sort of lay about, steam a little, dry slowly, then your probably OK.If you haven't serviced the cooling system in reasent memory, it would be prudent to do so now or soon as you get your manual. The holes you refer to are drain holes. They drain water and exhauast residue from the unsealed portion of the L/U casting. This is to help prevent breakage during a freeze. It is normal to have some cruddy looking stuff drain out when on the hose or in a confined area such as a tank. You should have water exiting the motor via the exhaust relief port located on the backside of the midsection, nearer the top. This may be an intermitant flow/spray do to the opening and closing of the t-stats. You might not have let your motor run long enough to warm up. Your motors dash panal should be equipt with an overheat warning light. It would be a good idea to test and/or repair it as well.

Re: 1966 Johnson 80 question

I just bought a 16 foot fiberglass boat with a 1966 Johnson seahorse 80 hp (V4LS-18). I looked at a vintage brochure of the 1966 Johnson Seahorse and it was on a boat just like the one I have. I have the title and the ID number is SCZF5335D967 the model is registered as a "duo" and is listed as a 1967 . The boat has a very small blunt end up front --about 6 inches across, and is a deep vee. The boat is in great shape (of course it has floor rot but , but what 40-year old boat doesn't.) I only need a few parts to return it to its original glory i.e. a windshield, steering (cable over pulleys) and some outer fittings.

My question is what kind of boat is this?? Did Johnson Seahorse ever make a boat like this?
