where do i put the water hose for water cooling, it is not like newer engines and i am not sure where the water inlet is. on the bottom of the gear case i see the exhaust and in the parts book it says water intake screen then up on the port side of the gear case is a by pass screen and just a couple inches up and forward of that still on the gear case there is a quarter inch hole.

You need a flushing adapter to attach a hose, many long moons ago obsolete.
But if you had one, it would go on the water intake screen on the leading edge of the exhaust outlet snout.

Get yourself a suitable container to stick the lower unit in. The water depth must be above the water pump.
