I am wondering just how I can hook this motor up for steering. I would like to stay away from cable/pulley steering since I hear it is illegal now. However, I do not understand how anything else would work. It has a handle on the front where it has a + like sign where something has hooked up before. I do not like the prices on the teleflex type steering either any suggestions? Just got this motor and put it on my 15' boat, just have no way to steer it. Boat had a 76 mercury 20hp motor on it with the flex cable hookup, but this does not seem to hookup with my older motor. I am anxious to get this baby out on the water so I'll take any help at all.
Thanks,
Mike

Who says it is illegal? Anyhow, you can buy the fitting and transom mount kit (here at iboats) to connect the Teleflex cable but you won't like it. Steering will be severely restricted, making slow speed manuvering and docking a pain. Worse, it is nearly impossible to get it so it will tilt all the way up without interference. So you say ok you just won't tilt it all the way up? How about when you hit an underwater obstruction and it comes flyiing up and busts something?

Totally agree with FR.
Wire rope and pulley is not illegal here in TX, nor was it in Fla when I left. Your state may be different.
It is sometimes very problematic to convert both a boat and motor that were not designed for teleflex-type steering with good results.

I have a '67 33hp that originally was set up for remote steering before I converted it to tiller. It wasn't a cable/pully set up but rather had a rotary/cable set up, though it didn't look like a more modern cable set up. To connect the cable, there was a connecter that screwed on the end of the steering cable and it would directly connect to the motor handle. I actually still have it and maybe the actual rotary cable set up. When I get to the garage where my boat is stored I'll try to find it and take some pics.

I have the same motor, Electramatic no less. The old rope and pulley is not illegal here, and if set up properly, it works great. I love my set-up, and am glad I did not try to convert it. Just too many issues with a single cable convert.

The hardware (pulleys, springs, etc) are still available new if you look. Wire rope at HD is cheap, too. Plenty of how-to's here on iboats (how I figured mine out).

+1. Here are some great links to show you how to hook up cable steering and where to get the proper hardware.

Hey hope this helps. took some doing to get it lined up but works flawless. Its a shoulder bolt holding the rod to the motor.
