1966 Johnson 100 outboard

I have a 1966 Johnson 100 outboard with a problem lower unit. I am looking for another lower unit for the motor I have. What year of Johnson (or other brand) 100 will bolt straight up to the 1966?

The 100 horse V4 made it's debut for 1966. With it came a new lower unit gear ratio exclusive to the 100, a 16:28. I believe you should look for a 1966-68 Johnson or Evinrude 100 l.u. only. All were electric shift (hydro-electric) and good replacement parts can be scarce. Use the correct lube in it as well, since it is not the same lube as for non-hydroelectric shift lower units.

It is NOT hydro-electric. Anyone who owns one of those should be aware of that fact. Using a hydro-electric control or shift switch or test procedures will bust something in the lower unit. It requires "Premium Blend" gear oil, which replaces the old Type C.

It is loosly related to the similar Stern Drive models, but not same as.

Used on 100hp Johnson and Evinrude outboards 1966-68 only.

Oops! :redface: I should have said "Electramatic". I knew there was some caveat regarding the lower unit, which I at least brought to life. Thanks to F_R for setting it straight (thumbsup)

Hydro-Electric made it's debut for 1968 on the new 55-horse 3 cylinder looper with the new generation lower unit. The re-engineered V4s would get their own version of that lower unit for 1969.

The Electramatic was still used on most V4s as late as 1968, then carried on through 1970 on one version of the 40 horse.
