Possibly set too rich. Also it is possible that the crankcase drain valves are plugged up. When that happens, fuel puddles in the crankcase at idle and when you open the throttle the puddle goes through the cylinders, causing a very rich mixture till it gets done swallowing and expelling the puddle.
Motors of that era were very inefficient and dumped a lot fuel overboard from those drain valves.
