my 80 electramatic seems to be killing my battery,no make that killed one .i swaped the stator from the 63 evinrude i have that i know works good ,no dice, still in the negative charge zone.though ive read the manual a hundred times i m having major brain meltdown.how do you test to see if the regulator is faulty?would a pooched reg show on the ampmeter as minus charge?got a feeling im doomed and might as well go back to old faithful(90 evinrude).

is it possible that a faulty ammeter gauge could be the culprit?no matter i suppose the 90 goes back on tomorrow barring any revalations that im missing something simple.sure tics me off though, it sure was running sweet ,might make a good winter project AGAIN! LOL.

I don't think a faulty guage would kill the battery, but the electric shift pulls juice when in gear. Are you sure the batt. is good and hot? Also, the generator does not put out until the engine hits about 1500 rpm

Don't know about a evinrude, but the manuel for my '66 johnny 40hp shows multiple tests to perform on the gen. And the regulator has to be 'polorized'. Don't give up just yet, lots of people run w/o the gen. on these......

it has a battery dist. ignition system which is differnt than the average motor.there is no gen other than the stator under the flywheel which puts out 20 amps supposedly and im putting out -20.just for fun i will swap the guages and see if i get the same reading ,its always possible the battery was junk from day one, though doubtful

My apologies...I did not know there is that much difference between a '66 40 and a 80hp...Keep reading here, someone will have the answer you seek.

no problem,im in the process of putting my 90 evinrude back on for the forseeable future.any parts i would of needed id have to scrounge around for anyways and i only got to the end of july and then its surgery time so that will most likely kill august.
