1966(?) 40hp Evinrude outboard help please!

I just got a new project boat and I believe it's a 1966 evinrude 40hp. the Model # is 40652b. Any ways I was replacing the fuel lines and I broke a plastic peice that is between the fuel connect and the carb. I don't know what this part is and can't find a schematics on a 1966 evinrude. Any help would be VERY much appreciated. I would imagine this is some sort of filter type of thing as there is a screen inside it. Thanks!

You're probably right, a fuel filter. The fuel pump has three fuel lines. One to the crankcase for vacuum, one from the gas tank and one to the carb. The fuel filter likely was quite brittle. Time for a new one anyways.

From what I have found out since original post I have a 1966 big twin 40hp evinrude. I believe it is a fuel pump. It doesn't have a hose for the vacuum line just a connection directly to the block through the back of it. Didn't think a pump would be so small but I'm not a boat guy more a car guy. Where's the best/cheapest place to find parts? I can't seem to find parts anywhere for it. Also is there somewhere online I can find a parts schematic or do I have to order a parts book? Any how, here's the pictures, please confirm that I am correct on all accounts here! I've been known to be wrong on a number of occasions and would rather trust someone that KNOWS what they are talking about. Thanks for your help! Much appreciated!

Yup, that's the fuel pump. You've broken off one of the nipples. Time to buy a new pump. I don't have the part number for that one, but they have them right here on iboats.

They're not horribly expensive.

They don't have one for the 66 40hp evinrude. any other suggestions?
On the back of the pump the number 304 089 then a 2 underneath it. I would imagine this is the part # but I cannot find one ANYWHERE!

Hi, I have a 1964 40 HP Evinrude. We just purchased a new fuel pump for this motor. We bought it from Van's Sport Center in Grand Rapids, MI (but they will ship) (616) 364-0666. We found out that there is a different style fuel pump that replaces the original. It looks a little smaller but it hooks up just fine. The guys are real helpful on the phone. Unfortunately for us, it didn't correct the problem. Our motor runs fine at low speeds but cuts back after you have been running at high speed for a very short while. If you have any suggestions, I am open for answers. Good luck. You shouldn't have any trouble as they have a huge inventory of parts for old motors. Jim 1819suny

Thanks Suny. Just so happens I'm in Lansing. May be able to have someone pick it up for me. Thanks alot! Sounds to me like you need a carb rebuild but I don't know alot about it. Just from the little I've read. I'm hoping I don't have the same problem as my motor has been sitting for a LONG time with untreated fuel in it! Good luck to you.
