I have a 1966 33hp evinrude. I rebuilt the carb this spring and don't think it was ever right. The motor would run somewhat good with both the high speed and low speed adjusters all the way in and would run like crap with either unscrewed a little bit.

Last time out it ran like it did all summer. When we came in it started fine then would run like crap until it would die and spit gas out the front of the carb. I would restart it and it would run fine for a about 20 seconds then run like crap again until it stalled about 2 minutes later. If I disconnected the gas it would run really good right before it ran all the way out of gas. What should I look into? Thanks

Assuming that you rebuilt the carburetor correctly.....................

(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)
(J. Reeves)

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Setting the high and low needle valves properly:

NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle valve adjustment.

(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, waiting for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.

(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Must not of read my post....

As stated the ONLY way it runs even halfway good with power is to keep both fully in. If they are unscrewed ANY the motor runs like crap and has no power.

Yea, I read it. Just advising the correct adjustment procedure. If the engine runs with both needle valve turned in, fuel is obviously entering via another route. Broken fuel pump diaphram? Fuel spitting out the carburetor throat.... broken leaf valve?

well it sounds like your float needle is staying open and flooding your motor, if you have to close the needles, they above is the proper way to set the jets. you have a problem, that need to be solved. running all the way closed, motor will run lean, not enough oil, and will eventually sieze up.

Joe and i typing at same time. we are both in agreement.

"Fuel spitting out the carburetor throat"

What would cause that? Also if I didn't put enough packing around the adjusters could that cause problems?
