A freind of mine dropped off an old Mercury red band 9.8 short shaft and asked if I could get the lower unit back on and get it running. It runs badly but a carb clean should take care of that , it has a nice hot spark. The lower unit went on after fiddling with the shift shaft lining up. The shift handle is broken off so if I can get a hold of one I will replace it. With vice grips on the broken handle I can get through forward, neutral and rev erse. Thing is when the handle is in the forward position the motor is in reverse, When in neutral I am in neutral. When the handle (vise grips ) is in reverse the motor is in forward. Could this be that the shift cam is upside down. I don't see any other way for this to happen. Never saw this before.
