Well the boat will be free to me if I get it running. Right now I'm trying to bypass the ignition key in the throtle box due to rot. Using a universal ignition key switch from a local auto parts store and togle switch for the choke. Its basicly like wiring up an old Ford. I was thinking of useing a Ford soliniod to replace the old one. Since I will bypass the nuetral switch in throtle box any issues that may aries is what I need help on figuring out. That and if any one has a wiring diagram for the bypass I'm doin it would be mutch help.

I'm not sure if it helps or not but here is a list of wiring diagrams. Max Rules.

I'm trying to do something similar and so far I'm unsuccessful, but I don't know very much about wiring.

The Solenoids look the same however they are not.
Biggest issue with bypassing the neutral safety switch well it is there for a reason. When you start it in gear you may very well find your boat in the back of your pickup truck with the trailer behind you. There is no such thing as free, The boat is not free it is going to cost money to get it running properly. Bypassing the Neutral safety switch can be done but you may end up with a post in the Stupid Human Tricks section if you do. As far as using a Ford solenoid it is about $10 more to get the proper solenoid seems me that it is much cheaper to get the proper solenoid switch than to buy a new starter or worse. If you want to do it. basically it is a 12 volt system if you are wiring a new key switch and such you should just go ahead and rewire the whole thing or buy a used control box from ebay or Craigslist might be a very good idea.

Re: 1965 merc 50hp

The only part I'm having trouble with is the 12v igition on wire. I'm pritty shore it runs to the switvh box and I wanna make shore it does so I don't burn it up. That and since it has been sitting, what should I spary in the cyclinders before the first crank. I'm gonna pull the plugs and hand turn the motor first just don't wanna run em dry since its been a while. I was thinking either the 2cycle oil and a spay bottle or straight 30.

Def Add a little TCW-3 oil to the cylinders remove spark plugs tilt motor up add TCW-3 oil to cylinder turn flywheel by hand.

Next Change water pump impeller it has probably dry rotted and its a good maintanence anyways.

You are probably going to have to tear down and rebuild the carbs. Follow instructions in your manual.

Lastly if you feel the need to assist in starting DO NOT use starter fluid carb cleaner or ether they WILL toast your motor. Mix a little 50:1 gas oil mix and spray through the intake it should fire very easily if you do that.
