vent hole just above prop shaft on front side draining oil and water. Also removed drain and fill screws to see if gear case was contaminated and it was not. Any ideas?

unburned fuel/oil mix. these 2 strokes aren't very efficient at burning everything, and barrel water get's gunky pretty quickly too!.. If your gear lube is good, no worries. You can run 50:1 mix in omc's newer than '64, so that should help if you're running a richer mix.

thanks kbait that makes sense because we were just using a small house hold trash can to run the engine in to make sure it started and run. I just bought this motor about a week ago. Somebody took real good care of this motor and it is pretty clean and was well maintained.

Yup - perfectly normal. That hole drains exhaust leg, especially important for winter storage to get the water out so it doesn't freeze in our cold Michigan climate. Use a wire to clean that hole out occasionally. And store motor upright so it will drain. 1965 10hp? Must be a 9.5hp.

thanks lindy46 We had this same motor on pontoon when I was kid and we beat the heck out of it and it never failed us I keep all my motors in the basement in the winter. I also have a 1967 9.5 johnson turtleback that runs good except at low idle it wants to stall out unless you run the choke a little bit. Plan to take care of that over the winter. I believe that the carb needs a little work on it. I bought this motor at a yard sale spring of 09 for 300.00 dollars and the guy told me that it run good but was sitting in his shed for afew years. Well when I got it started it wasnt pumping any water so I shut down immediatly, figured it needed a new impeller. It definatly needed that and afew other things the head was warped, spark plug was stripped, then it wouldn't start again, well needless to say I got roughly $750.00 into this venture.
