I have a 1965 9.5HP Johnson. It runs fine with the hood off. As soon as I sit the hood down on it, she dies.

I actually thought it might be an exhaust leak, but I checked the gasket with a soap solution and found no leaks.

I can't find where the hood is pinching any fuel lines.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance.

Dale

There should be no insulation directly above the choke bowl at the top of the carb.

On this engine, between the exhaust housing, and exhaust housing cover, there is a large, donut shaped, rubber ring. This ring is where the engine is sucking in exhaust gases.

Not familiar with the specifics of your engine cover ,but insure that the cover latch is not grounding the sparkplug lead when installed.Common problem on some earlier model higher hp engines.Otherwise I suspect you have an exhaust leak or the engine cover intake is restricted.

Inside the exhust housing is the shift rod. It slides up and down (as you shift) and is sealed inside a little bellows that is secured to the exhust hsg with 3 little bitty screws. The bellows allows for the up and down movement of the shift rod while keeping out unwanted items (exhust and water). Very common to happen!!! So...The bellows is ripp'd and exhust is flowing up into the inside cavity of the engine. I gave up years ago trying to get those Frick'n-fracken screws out as they're WAY up inside and they never come out with out rounding off the screw heads and/or breaking. AND, the exhust housing has be un-available for years!!! The best thing is, as spoken before, drill a hole and place a "scoop" just above the carb. May or may not be acceptable! Or best yet, deep six that sucker and buy a new four stroke!! Two cylinder 8hp will have all the power (pretty much) that the 9.5 had!!

I want to thank everyone for all the replies!

We decided to go ahead and drill the hood and fab a scoop for it. It works fine now.

I realize the hood is hard to come by, but I believe it's much easier doing this than to change the exhaust gasket.

Thanks again!
