I was recently given a 1965 6 hp and have just got it running but it would die when I tried to idle it down.So I set the low speed at one and a half turns out went to start it and the whole rope came out in my hand. I tried putting a screwdriver in slot and turning counterclockwise 16.5 turns per LeeRoysramblings (great site) but it is not winding up. Does this mean something has turned loose and I need to disassemble the starter and get it back right or is there a better solution? Any advice appreciated.

No indication of the spring tightening as you wind it?
that indicates one of 2 issues. The spring is no longer anchored at both ends or its broken in the middle.

You have to take the recoil apart and figure out which. Finding a replacement will be potentially difficult so hopefully its not a broken spring.

Thanks fhhuber I was thinking it must be something like that but wanted to be sure before I took it apart. I guess that will be tomorrows project.I will let you know what I find.

Don't know if you have torn into this yet but be advised that working on pull starters can be one of the most challenging repair jobs on a motor. Trying to wind a recoil spring by hand can end in lots of bad words getting said not to mention blood shed.

Sorry , but on this recoil it is near impossible to hurt yourself.----A very gentle spring that is in there !-----Just not the same as a recoil that is mounted over top of the flywheel !

Thanks for all the help guys, the spring had come loose from the bottom. I got it back in put everything back together, wound it 16.5 turns put my rope on and it works fine now. I think it now just needs some fine tuning as it is not starting on one or two pulls like my 5.5 hp does and it is not idling down as much as it should without dying. I suspect it is running a little rich because I pulled a plug and it seemed to have a lot of gas on it. Will keep tuning til I get it right. Any advice on it will be appreciated.

^^ could help. Think you might replace the impeller, then consider a carb rebuild.
