I just started fixing up a 1965 33HP Evinrude, and found that the shifting rod in the upper housing is bent. How do I replace it?

You have to pull the powerhead up from the leg, the shifting rod starts just below the poverhead at the shifting arm.

Thanks for the info. One last question (I hope). I took a look around the powerhead, and only see two nuts holding it from above to the exhaust housing. Are there any bolts or nuts located on top that I need to remove to separate the powerhead from the housing?

Remove two nuts on top and eight screws under.
