I’ve recently acquired an old Mercury Model 110 that appears to have had little use. The serial number comes back to a 1964 model of a 1964-1966 series.

Everything was original, so I changed the lower unit oil and replaced the water pump impeller.

Before heading out to the lake, I did a test run in a trash can with the water about half way up the leg. I get a weak stream of water out a hole on the port side at idle. Not really impressive. Rev it up to the start rev limit and it's better, but not great and the water was surprisingly hot after a while.

Concerned, I rigged up a thermocouple on the side of the top cylinder and ran it again.

At idle the temp steadily climbs to about 170F and the water discharge gets steamy. If I raise the idle to the start limit (about 2000 rpm by ear) the temp falls and hovers around 140F.

Should I be worried?

Thanks in advance!
