Picked up a 1964? johnson rx-12m 28 hp for parts for my 1962 gale 40 hp. out of a whim i said lets see if she cranks over. sure enough she did. not bad for 50 dollars. not i noticed that something must be wrong with the cooling system since after running her for a max of 3 mins she was to hot to touch. pulled the lower unit as much as i can because i don't know how to release the shifter rod from up further in the engine. I noticed who ever had it before didn't replace the lower seals. no gasket on the lower part where the gears are and no gasket on the motor where the water pump is enclosed. the person that had it before the junkyard had used a silicone product to try and make a gasket on all but inside the water pump.
pulled the water pump apart to inspect the impeller. impeller looks good to me no missing tongs and no crack pretty pliable. now i didn't notice any gaskets in there either don't know if there should be. water impeller key was there.
now i also took my garden hose and and pushed water up through the copper tube and it came out the water exhaust port on the engine also pushed water from the intake on the side and it came through. the water pump.
to get the impeller back into the pump housing i had to bend the tongs of the impeller over is this right?
now my question i guess is how do i drop the shifter rod and would missing gaskets be all my problem.
