I just found a 1964(I think) Johnson 75 hp motor that has been sitting inside for over 30 years(1980), the model number is ( V4AL-16D ) I have seen V4A-16 models listed, what do the L and the D represent in my model number?
Where can I find and read the information about reviving an older outboard motor? Off the top of my head,
I'm going to need a new Impeller, lower end gear oil, plugs, point(s), carburetors cleaned out old fuel, more cleaning.....etc. Thank-you for any and all advice! Jim

"L" is likely longshaft (20"). You should see the 5" extension piece bolted between the midsection and the gearcase. Not sure about the "D".

What Chris said. "L" means it left the factory as a long shaft. Could have been converted to short since then. Look for the 5" extension. The trailing "D" identifies any mid-year engineering changes.....IF there were any changes. Otherwise, it means nothing. The parts book will tell the changes if there were any.
