I was just given a 20' 1964 IMP Aztec. It's been sitting for a few years, but the hull and interior appear to be in good shape and the rebuilt engine only has 100 hours on it (225hp Stern drive I believe). I plan on taking it to a shop to find out exactly what needs to be done to get it running. I know all boats are money pits but how much should I be willing to put into this boat to get it running? When should I cut my losses and find a different boat?

Tough question to answer. Do you like the boat and does it fit your needs? Is the trailer in good shape? If those 2 questions are Yes then a grand or two might not be bad. Make sure to check the floor and stringers for structural integrity.

However if you don't really like the style of the boat, at that age, I wouldn't put much more than tuneup-type of dollars in it.

Thanks for the quick response. The trailer is in good condition. The only money I have into this boat are for the tires on the trailer because I had to tow it 200 miles. The only thing I want a boat for is fishing so it's not completely necessary but my wife likes the idea of taking friends out and towing tubes and skiers. I would almost prefer a run about like this one because I would think it would be cheaper to maintain and still get me out on the water. GLASSPAR FISHING BOAT SALE/TRADE

A 1964 boat is not what most would call fresh, but each boat is as good as the previous owner, and how the boat was cared for. Left out and exposed to water, I will almost bet, you will have some rot in the structure of the boat. Your boat is near 50 years old, that's a ton of time for things to possibly be neglected. Using a marina or boat shop to get her back in running order will be quite costly, but this all depends on when it was last run. Take a handful of pictures and post them up here, floors, transom, stringers, outdrives are all area's to inspect well. You either have a gem or something less. Depending how handy you are will dictate how much work and $$ you will need to get her back to operating safe and well.

This boat looks clean ~~~ on the surface but we don't know what the innards are like. The ONLY good thing to say about that old 'rude is parts are not impossible to find. You may be better off with what you have.
