My Dad and I have got my late Grandfather's 1964 Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 hp outboard motor. It's been sitting for a few years so we put new plugs in it last night, pumped it full of new gas, and after quite a few pulls, fired it up in a tank of water. We noticed that there was no water discharging from the motor so we're wondering if the water pump isn't operating. My Granpa bought this motor brand new and we've got many memories of fishing with him as this motor took us from fishing hole to fishing hole. My Dad and I would love to keep this motor running so we're looking for any advice on how to make that happen. We're both do-it-yourselfers, but we've never tinkered with boat motors before. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,

Don't run that motor for any length of time if you suspect it is not pumping water. This is an easy problem to fix and you should fix it before you damage your motor in a major way.

I imagine your grandfather took good care of that motor but anytime a motor has been sitting around for a number of years, there are some things that have to be taken care in order to have it running well again. I suggest a good tune up to include changing the lower impeller water pump, a carb and ignition tune up. The parts for all this will cost around $100 and you will have a good motor as well as the fun and experience from fixing it up. I know exactly how you feel about your grandfathers motor and I think you will enjoy fixing it up. I fixed up one like my grandfather had and when I took it fishing, the smell, sound, and feel of that motor brought back a lot of good memories. Go to the library or buy a service manual for that motor and start reading. Those manuals have some good overall descriptions of how those 2 cycle motors work. Your 9.5 is the big brother to my 5.5 and also the 7.5 and the ignition, carburetor, and impeller are pretty much the same. There are minor differences but you can learn a lot just by reading through the posts on this board. I've been shopping around for one of those old 9.5's to add to my collection and write up on my http://outboard-boat-motor-repair.com site. It's amazing how many of those 40 and 50 year old motors are out there. They were built well and I'll bet they will still be around in another 50 years.

Tom Travis

Happy Father's Day everyone. I hope many of us will have good memories of our fathers and grandfathers while working on their old motors. As for myself, I am going to take my old LighTwin (like grandad had), my father and son and go fishing. I have bigger boats and motors but today is for remembering the old timers.
