My neighbor put this motor out on the curb with a free sign on it so I grabbed it, looked like it had been fished out of the lake. I cleaned it up and got it running but it runs rough and looks like it;s missing some parts.

i dont want to spend a bunch of time and money on it to find out its not usable, so my question

is there a way to get pictures or somethinf to show me what its supposed to look like when all the parts are there, and is there an online manual for a 64?
i found a link the the home page but it only goes back to 68 and does not list a model close to this one.

it's an mq-10r not sure what the r is for?

Can someone help me out or point me to a good place to find an online manual.

Thanks in advance

No on-line service manual, but you can find a model specific factory service manual on Ebay- the models don't change a lot from 1964-1973 or between Johnson and Evinrude, so get what you can for the least cost.

The 1968 9.5 parts catalog is on-line: http://shop.evinrude.com/

Select the diagram in the upper right corner and navigate to the 1968 model. Most parts are the same, but check here or with a dealer or get the original parts manual.

Re: 1964 9.5 Johnson motor help

Okay i found out the whole spool and sleeve assembly is missing anyone in Fort worth know a good place to buy parts or a good mechanic to get this back into running condition. I don't mind doing the labor I just don't know where to start.

maybe I just need some good advice to get me started?

I did get the cylinders compression tested and they are testing to 50 to 60 psi, I think this is good anybody?

Your compression is on the lower side of good. I would suggest you do a SeaFoam decarb to see if it will loosen the rings and bring it up a bit. I think 60 or more is fine for the motor you have but as always the higher the better. I did see a brand new 9.5 complete starter assembly on Ebay a couple of days ago. Rick.

"there were no changes to the 9.5 until 1972, all prior are just alike."

The 1964 and 1965 have quite a few small differences from later models of the 9.5, including a different suspension, different hood latch systems, and different seals. They started life with different fuel pumps

The starter spring has to be wound 18 turns counter-clockwise with the rope fully extended; then it will take up all of the slack. You must use the correct OEM rope on a perfectly dry spool.

The factory service manuals called for 20.5 turns but was corrected to 18 by OMC service bulletin #1276 due to many broken springs.

i just rebuilt my 1970 recoil.. same as yours. That thing is a bear to get right..I went 20.5 turns with mine, but Nooo way am i taking it apart again, even though the spring was 50 bucks. Make sure to turn it COUNTER CLOCKWISE. There is also a gasket in the recoil under the screws that seal the water system in it.. Start without that on, and look out for the guyser.

You are exactly correct about the gasket, I was comparing old parts to new and the new one did not come with that gasket, so I'll need to remove the new one and replace with the old bbefore I start putting everything back into place.
