My motor ran fine all year untill the last time I took it out. It will run for about 3 to 5 seconds then stall out. It will start back up after a few pulls, but I have to have it choked for it to fire. I made no changes to the motor, it just started doing this all of a sudden. Now I changed the fuel line and put new plugs in, but it still does the same thing. Before I do anything else I thought maybe I would get a few ideas from you guys first. What should I look at next?

When you pull the choke, you force the engine to pull more gas into the engine by closing off the air with the choke plate.

If this is the only way to keep the engine running, this generally indicates that your high speed jet is clogged. It is located just behind and aligned with the drain plug in the float bowl of the carburetor.

It is recommended to get a carburetor kit and rebuild the carburetor. The 9.5 carb is one of the easiest to work on. The carburetor kit is part number 0382,048. There are no aftermarket carburetor kits for the 9.5 HP motors.

ok thanks I will try cleaning that thanks for the part number. Also what is the correct fuel mixture for the motor. I have been told 50:1 and 24:1 which is it?

50:1 87 or 89 US octane to TC-W3 oil. You get less plug fouling and carbon using the synthetic TC-W3 oils. Many 100% synthetic TC-W3 oils like Pennzoil's are biodegradable according to the manufacturers.

where can I find the carburetor kit online. The earliest year I can find parts for is 68?

Part #382,048, the 9.5 carburetor kit, is the same for all years they were made, 1964 through 1973.

well I cleaned the carb and put it all back together (twice) and it will not run at all. If I spray some carb cleaner or put some gas in the carb it will run:confused:

You have to use the full choke to start the engine when it is cold.

Did you put the clip on the new float valve needle and hook it to the float arm?

yes everything seems to be correct. On a side note what plug am I suppose to be running in this motor. It had a J8 and my local dealer told me it was supposed to be a J6 and a book I was looking at said J4??

Re: 1964 9 1/2 hp stalls

The correct plugs are Champion J4C set at .030: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/BRP/SparkPlugChart2008.pdf

You can look up parts yourself on the BRP site. They don't have the 1964-1967 motors, but much of the 1968 information is the same: http://shop.evinrude.com/

The spark plugs are shown on the cylinder and crankcase diagrams. Clicking the number on the diagram takes you to the parts list and clicking the magnifying glass takes you to the superseding parts listing.

well i rebuilt the carb and the motor starts first pull, but it will only idle at 1/2 throttle and when you put it in gear you have to give it gas very very slowly or it will die. If you put it in gear it will stay running until you give it throttle to quikly. At least I am moving forward on this motor, what else should I check out?

Did you give the carb a good cleaning including all of the various passages?

I think you should check spark in case you're only running on once cylinder.
(You did say "what else", and spark is always "what else" for me!:D)
I love my $6 autozone spark tester, since just having spark ain't always good-n'uff--it needs to be able to jump a 1/4 inch air gap on the tester.....
here's a pic of my tester.

BTW, have you tried running it with the cowl off, or running it with a fan blowing the exhaust gases away from the motor so it doesn't choke on it's own fumes? (common problem)

I guess i will have to get a spark tester and I tried running it with the cowl off and it ran the same. didn't try blowing a fan on it though.
