1964 40hp evenrude lower unit help

I replacing the hag in the lower unit. when I removed the hag. the next seal in line fell off the shaft. this is a cupped shaped metal rubber seal. I believe this seal gets pressed into the hag. my question is does the cup side get pressed into the hag or does the cupped side face the bearing.

I have no idea what a hag is but the seals on that engine are installed so that the numbers on the metal portion of the seal will still be visible.
