I recently removed the coils, condensor, points, wires.. the whole unit (not sure what you would call that). I am putting everything back together and must have done something worng because when I try to start the throttle will not stay set. It wants to bounce all over the place. What did I do wrong?

Is the flywheel hitting the coils and are all of the wires to the points/condensers out of the way?

hi nathan. it's called a magneto/igniton. It should look like this when it's all done.

Make sure all of the wires are tucked away so that they can't be damaged.

As for the throttle, closely examine the throttle linkages. You might have a few teeth on some of the gears that aren't lining up. Did the throttle work correctly before you replaced all the points, etc....?

Sounds like the flywheel is hitting the coils.

Yep, Flywheel was hitting the coils. I got them in the right spot now and started it and it ran great in the back yard. Just took it out to the lake and it started missing again. I don't have the correct mount to leave the motor on the boat when I'm hauling it to the lake so could all the movement knock things out of line to where it goes back to only firing on one cylinder? Whats the proper plug gap and what plugs would you guys recomment?

Movement shouldn't knock anything out of alignment. Use Champion J6C plugs set to .030". You say you removed the coils, etc. Did you replace them with new? Check spark? Points set to .020"?

Be sure the stator plate doesn't wobble.

I did not replace the coils after inspecting them they seemed to be in working order. I set the points at .020. I didn't exactly check for spark, but I was able to start the motor and it ran the best it has yet. Got out on the lake and it ran great for about 20 seconds and then started cutting out again. Got back home pulled the plugs and it looked like one of them had nearly no gap what so ever. Maybe I over tightened on installation. Not sure why it ran so great in the back yard though...

If you were using the right Champion plugs and one of the electrodes got flattened, you have serious engine problems....

You may want to take the head off for a better view of what may lay ahead for you

Is it possible to flatten the electrode on the plug from putting them on there too tight?

No, to flatten one of those guys you either had to drop it, or you got something hitting it from the inside, example:the piston, maybe a broken ring, which cylinder is it own?
