I was recently given a 1963 model Starcraft. The engine markings say Gale and there is a plate on the dash that reads Gale IIII. I contacted Starcraft and they said they have never heard of it. What I am looking for is any info that can help me to restore the boat. Any help will be greatly appreciated. If I did not put enough info in here please let me know.

Here are a few pics, the first one is the marking on the dash, the next one is not a very good pic but as you can probably tell I have a very cluttered garage, I will be able to post better ones later. The next two are of the motor which reads Gale IIII Bucaneer 35 hp. The boat is 13 ft long and the motor markings are Model #35DE10B, serial #745298.

OK. That instrument panel came with the Gale engine, which is why it has the logo. You might have Gale on the throttle and shifter controls, too.

Interestingly enough, Starcraft made the aluminum boats sold during that period under the Ward's Sea King name. Wards also sold Gale outboards, branded as Sea Kings, so there also may have been a connection between Starcraft and Gale to produce combos.

Good outboard, too, that 35. Made by Gale, a division of OMC, who also made Johnson and Evinrude.

Thanks for the info, I couldnt find any info on Gale except for racing boats. Any idea where I could get replacement parts for it? Or a catalog?

Many of the commonly-needed parts are the same as the same period's 40hp models of Johnson and Evinrude. Stuff like coils, etc.

You can find common parts listed under Gale in the Sierra Marine parts catalog at any NAPA Auto Parts Place. They have things like points, plugs, impellers, carb kits, and the like.

If you can find the model number on your Gale, we can give you some more information on the engine, but you'll find that it's much the same as the 35 and 40 hp Big Twins from the late 50s and early 60s. There are some differences, but most commonly replaceable parts are the same.

Gale part numbers are the same as OMC part numbers, so many other parts can be obtained at your nearest Evinrude dealer. Just don't tell them you have a Gale.

As for service and parts manuals, I don't have a source, but I have seen them on ebay.

OK, I missed your model number. It's a Gale Buccaneer. The year is 1958. You can see the list at:

http://www.discount-marine-parts.com/ob_buccaneer_1.html

Looking at the outboard, I see that it has the outer soundproofing housing introduced on the 1958 Johnson Super Sea Horse RDS-20 and the Evinrude Lark.

I suspect that you'll find most of it to be the same as the RDS-20, since it has the same features. There will be minor differences, I'm sure, but, it will be substantially the same engine.

That's a great engine, by the way. It's very torquey and feels more like a 40hp than a 35. Lots of folks here have one or a later model of the same basic engine, so you'll get lots of help here.
