Anybody here have experience rebuilding one of these? I have the factory manual and it seems pretty basic. No real speciality tools are required except for the shift shaft bushing removal tool (which isn't really required) and the gear cover tool which i'm having a hard time finding.

I will be swapping gear housing and all internal parts with new shims and the like. My question is in measuring the backlash. Are specialty tools required for measuring backlash? I don't think it's rocket science to feel the amount of play between the gears.I consider myself mechanically inclined.

I understand that newer model/high horsepower lower units require these specialty tools, something the factory manual makes no mention of for this.

any tips or advice i should know before moving forward? I have already tried purchasing a lower unit, which turned out to require a new prop shaft so I am returning it and doing the job myself with all of my existing near pristine existing parts.

Thanks for the help and sorry for the long post.
